A year ago the world was rocked by accusations made Chris Wylie, the self-described whistleblower, that Cambridge Analytica had helped Donald Trump win the US election by illicitly mining Facebook data. Wylie also claimed that similar data analytics techniques had manipulated the Brexit vote. Cambridge Analytica strenuously denied the claims. However, British regulators launched an investigation and the company has since gone bust. So what have we learnt a year later about how this story unfolded in the media and political world? What does it mean for the future of data mining? Is it ever possible to conduct this in a non-controversial manner? And what does this imply for tech giants such as Facebook?
