China’s rise as an economic powerhouse has catapulted its healthcare system to the centre of the global stage. The world’s second biggest healthcare market is already experiencing double-digit growth, but its large and ageing population makes further expansion inevitable. By 2030, the number of Chinese citizens over the age of 60 will be greater than the entire US population. The trend is fuelling growth opportunity, but it’s also increasing the healthcare burden. China’s much-lauded value-based healthcare reforms are steadily building the infrastructure to manage demand – but reform alone is unlikely to be enough. Providers and healthcare companies know they must find innovative solutions if they’re to improve the health of the world’s largest population.
